Learning Extension Program

Citipointe Christian College Brisbane offers an extensive array of extension opportunities in the primary school, to foster and develop the special abilities of gifted and talented and high ability students. The primary learning extension team consists of highly qualified and experienced staff in gifted and talented education who have been extending and challenging gifted, talented and high ability students for well over a decade.

Identified students may be offered extension, enrichment and acceleration, both within our College and externally. Internally, the College offers four specialized STEM based programs: small groups of
our youngest studSTEM Investigators Year 6ents engage in weekly Mathematics extension lessons, challenging them with hands on, open-ended investigations from the Maths300 program, while the top Maths class in Years 3-6 engage in weekly Maths300 lessons, requiring them to work collaboratively to apply a number of strategies to solve real life problems. Some students in Years 2 and 3 who are able to move beyond the core content of the classroom Science curriculum are given the opportunity to become scientists each week in the Explorers Program, investigating real life open-ended science and technology activities from the CSIRO CREST Awards program. New this year, the STEM Investigators Program challenges gifted and high achieving students in STEM subjects from Year 4-6 in a weekly double period. These students investigate fictional and real life problems and use Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in an integrated manner, working collaboratively to come up with possible solutions.

Students in Years 4-6 with identified strengths in the Humanities are invited to engage with like-minded peers two days per week through the ASPIRE program. The fast pace of these classes invigorates students as they complete their year level’s curriculum in a compacted manner, allowing for additional time to participate in extension activities, while learning more about themselves as gifted and high achieving students.

In exceptional circumstances, students whose cognitive ability is well above their chronological age in a single subject or across all subjects may be accelerated in their learning to a higher year level for Mathematics only or a whole year level, when sufficient data is gathered to support these decisions.

A variety of extension clubs are also offered throughout some morning tea and lunch times and generally change each year to support the interests of the students.

Primary students are also given extensive opportunities to participate in external academic and creative competitions, including poetry and short story writing, English, Mathematics, Science, History and Digital Technologies. They also have the opportunity to compete directly against students from other schools through interschool competitions such as debating competitions, Kids Lit Quiz, Mathematical team challenges, and Tournament of Minds.

Many of our primary students enjoy the enriching experience of participating in external workshops with students from other schools, during term time and holiday periods. External Gifted and Talented organisations regularly provide opportunities for further discoveries across a wide range of subject areas.
