Year 2 is a momentous year in the life of a child.
Welcome to Year 2 at Citipointe Christian College. Throughout this year you will notice significant developments in your child as the Year 2 teachers seek to develop not only strong academic understandings but important character traits such as integrity, work ethic, honesty and a passion for God that will remain throughout their lives. Year 2 is a time of growth in a child’s independence. They thrive on being more responsible and relish the challenge of taking more ownership for their learning. It is our prayer that you will join with us to create a powerful educational team that provides your child with the support, tools, skills, knowledge and pathways to achieve their dreams.
Major Unit 1. Science – Life Stages
Minor Unit 1. Geography – Where am I?
Major Unit 2. Science – Water for Life
Minor Unit 2. History – The Past in the Present
During the Science “Life Stages” Unit the children develop their understanding of the different stages of life. This culminates in an adorable incursion where the children cuddle fluffy chickens, feed baby lambs and get close with other delightful farmyard animals. It is a definite photo opportunity. There are smiles and squeals of delight all round. The Geography Unit asks, “Where Am I?” In this unit the children look at geographical location. They learn about continents, oceans, the tropics, the equator and following a compass. They even get to use a compass to find lost treasure hidden around the school.
The “Water for Life” Unit sees students learn about how the water cycle works and how the responsible use of this resource is crucial to human survival. The History Unit, “The Past in the Present”, transports the children back in time as they go on an excursion to Newstead House, visiting statues, bridges and memorial sites on the way.
Major Unit 3. Geography – Making Connections
Minor Unit 3. Science – Pushes and Pulls
Major Unit 4. History – History Makers
Minor Unit 4. Science – Mixing Materials
Semester Two demonstrates how we are connected through geographical locality, language, unique places, family and special events through the “Making Connections” unit. The students also get the opportunity to conduct investigations based on forces as they actively participate in the “Pushes and Pulls” unit. The children complete experiments that explore push and pull forces and allow them to apply this knowledge to real world situations.
In “Mixing Materials” the students have the opportunity to take part in more experiments. They will be investigating the world of scientific processes, properties and possibilities as they mix various wet and dry materials. The children love going on the excursion to the Sciencentre where they experience all sorts of exciting scientific activities. Finally in the “History Makers” unit the students learn about Clem Jones, Emma Miller and John Story. The students identify how monuments, roads and bridges can be named after people who have made significant achievements in ways that are of value to society.
